Many people are on the juicing bandwagon these days and are making all sorts of juice cocktails. Wheatgrass juice is in a league of its own and is best consumed as juice and not the powder you see sold in most health food stores.
It is very similar to aloe vera benefit-wise except that you only need to start on 1-2oz a day to see results from drinking it.
What is Wheatgrass Juice?
It is the baby grass of wheat and is gluten-free. You can normally buy it at health food markets and even some health food shops. The juice should only be taken on an empty stomach and can take some getting used to.
Personally, I like it flash-frozen straight from the field. This bumps up the price to £54 a packet for 28oz of individual 1oz parcels. Quite expensive if you are on a tight budget.
Trays of the grass are easier on the pocket and are between £7-10 a tray. Each one yields about 9oz of juice.
You will need to have a juicer that can juice wheatgrass as it is quite stringy – even more so than celery.
The good thing about wheatgrass juice is that you should see the effects on your body within a week as it is so powerful.
Personally, I found wheatgrass:
- Toned my skin
- Restored elasticity
- Contributed to weight loss
- Enhanced my vision
- Made my hair thick and bushy
- Made my nails strong
What is Wheatgrass Made Of?
It is one of the few grasses that has a complete protein profile. All essential amino acids are included. Chlorophyll – plant blood – is similar to our own haemoglobin and serves as a blood enricher. This means that it can raise low blood counts of invalids back to a healthy level. All minerals and vitamins are included. Wheatgrass is a complete food.
As the taste is quite acquired, you may have to lick a slice of lemon afterwards to take the wheatgrass juice taste off your tongue. The good thing is that the benefits outweigh the taste.
The sicker you are the more juice you will need – up to 8oz daily. As wheatgrass juice is powerful, you should drink 2 oz in the morning on an empty stomach and 2 oz in the afternoon. The same in the evening.
Depending on your weight. I am 12 stone – 75kg and take up to 4oz a day when drinking this. Mind you if you are relatively quite heavy for your height and not a body builder – you may feel a little queasy as your liver is being cleansed.
In that case, prepare yourself at least a fortnight beforehand. Have a salad at least once a day….A 5-8 veg salad with avocado rather than mayo.
You only need to take wheatgrass when you are in need of an extra boost of nutrients and trying to reverse symptoms of illness.
Powdered wheatgrass is not as potent as the juice as it is missing the full chlorophyll juice factor.
It is possible to grow wheatgrass at home, however that would take another blog post or two to describe and you might get bored with all the details so I will spare you!
For those of you who do want to try growing wheatgrass at home – you can try the soil-free method as well as the soil method. You will need trays and wheatgrain (seeds). There is also the option to buy special equipment to grow wheatgrass at home.
Where Can I Get It?
Mostly from organic juice bars. And even organic wheatgrass growers in your city. One tray of wheatgrass will set you back $5-7. One tray will produce around 6oz of juice. So it would be better to buy 4 trays a week.
To extract the juice from the wheatgrass, you will need a wheatgrass juicer.
You can buy a dedicated wheatgrass juicer from Amazon
Here is one with 5% discount…
This Wheatgrass juicer is made from stainless steel so will never rust. As it is manual, you will be getting some arm exercise, but at least the pulp that is left over will be extra dry. Unlike a cold-press juicer which will definitely leave more juice in the pulp.
All you need is 2oz in the morning and 2oz in the night….To see the results I mentioned earlier. Let me know how you get on! I’d love to hear from you.
Live Wheatgrass Juice
For those of you who don’t like the idea of manually juicing wheatgrass, you can get frozen wheatgrass juice from Brittsuperfoods.co.uk – They supply live wheatgrass juice from their own farms and do all the heavy juicing for you. The juice comes frozen in 30 1 ounce sachets to a packet. That equals 1 ounce (5ml) per sachet.
All you need do is defrost it or lick it like a lollipop…The more packets of wheatgrass you get, the cheaper the price.
I was unaware of this method for helping with skin, nails, and even improves vision. I thought carrots were the only real thing to help for eyes.
A lot of people would not have mentioned that the taste isn’t that great. I will have to consider this when I try this method. Thanks for the article!
Hi Ernest, glad you like the article.
Yes, wheatgrass can even be used during cancer recovery and a whole load of other things besides vision. It truly is a ‘superfood’ which very few people really understand about even though they drink it!
Learning about wheatgrass is an education of which I have only skimmed the surface.
thank you for sharing as i had not heard of wheatgrass before.Your pages are very educative and i enjoyed reading them and could continue reading.I use forever living aloe vera gel juice, but having read your article will also try the gel sometime.I have not ever suffered with skin problems but could not imagine coping as i would itch and scratch all the time -which is something you must not do.I think your business will be supportive to so many…will you have a link for forever living products?thank you for sharing in such a candid way.Anthea xx
Hello Anthea, Forever Living Products are wonderful and I used Aloe Gelly on my skin to calm the skin down as well. I would suggest going to their website or Facebook page to contact a distributor. If you don’t have success, do feel free to come back to my site. I will do my best to help you..
Have you discovered why you have the constant itch? It could be something you are eating or the environment like hot sun, dry heat from another source. A carpet doesn’t help either, it’s full of dust plus dustmites!
Dear Stella ,
I believe wheat grass juice is one the best natural juices one can enjoy. Personally I have tried it and experienced its health benefits as a detox and a nourisher.
It is gaining popularity where I come from and would love to see a blog post on how to grow it at home.
Thanks,
Oscar
Hi Oscar,
Yes it is really medicine for our bodies, isn’t it?
It actually grew out of fashion in the 30s because scientists didn’t know how to package it without it going off (bad).
Now it is in powder form as well as frozen juice form.
I do know how to grow it and have a wheatgrass grower at home (manuall). It can be labour intensive though. Wheatgrass can be grown with or without soil.
It is less messy and useful to grow without soil if you don’t have a garden. You can check out some books online, for example Anne Wigmore’s “Wheatgrass book”. She has the basic growing method in her bookand also lists all the various nutrients the grass contains.
Tell me how you get on!
It is always good to go natural as we seek to improve our health. What you are sharing here is pretty amazing. It seems like this juice has so much to offer. It is so good to see what this juice can do. I believe what ever we drink we should always ensure that it is doing our bodies a whole lot of good. Thanks for this post that is real detailed and informative.
Yes, Norman, the natural route is always much safer.
The trick is not to mix it with conventional medicine as the mix could have harmful effects.
I have never tried this. It is pretty interesting to know that it can help with weight loss because my mom should lose up to 20 kilograms. What you think how much time is needed for someone to lose 10 kilos with wheatgrass? Thank you for this interesting topic. I think that it will help a lot people because it have many benefits for human body.
Hi Daniel,
It would be better for your Mum to go on a juice fast. A different juice each time. The more veggies and green, the better. Start her on 1 then by the end of a week she should be on up to 5 a day. Make it tasty by adding green apples to it.
Monitor her progress. Wheatgrass juice is an acquired taste and the heavier a person is the less likely they are to stomach it.
Very interesting post about wheatgrass. Seems as you say to be a super food containing everything the human body needs. I noticed you wrote about people who are sick taking it. Does that mean healthy individuals can not take it? Is it only to be used for medical purposes?
I could stand to lose a little weight myself, make my skin more vibrant and cleanse my internal organs. Not ready to give up my normal diet yet but it would not hurt to at least give something like this a try to see if it would benefit my body.
Thank you for this interesting post and I look forward to seeing more in the future.
Proud papa of two,
Jody
Jody,
You could take wheatgrass as a tonic. However it is an acquired taste….Not sweet, not savoury. And it is more effective taken on its own on an empty stomach. You only need an ounce a day at first as it is very potent.
It is also very expensive unless you grow your own. (No harm in trying though!)
I am very glad you enjoyed reading it. Thank you.
I have tried wheatgrass shots, but they are not my cup of tea. I really like the health benefits, but the taste makes me gag and stays with me for quite some time. I didn’t know about the lemon trick, which makes sense. If it works for tequilla why not for Wheatgrass. So I think I will try again and take some lemon afterwards.
Thanks for the tip
Hi Linda, you may have to do a bowel cleanse first so as to prep your body for accepting wheatgrass juice.
It is an acquired taste I agree, and it is even more so if a person is on the large side. Their liver will protest!
Take care and all the best…
Stella
Hi,
I believe this is the first time I heard about wheatgrass in juice. Can you share a recipe of how you make it or what do you add?
As with all greens, I see that wheatgrass is another green vegetable that leaves a ton of benefits for your health. How awesome. I like green juices!
If you can please share a delicious sugarless way to make a wheatgrass juice, I would appreciate.
Oscar
Green juices can be flavoured with apple juice/lemon juice and ginger. Put a little in at a time til you find it tastes good to you.
Wheatgrass is an acquired taste and is best on an empty stomach in the morning. You can add some lemon to it, but it is best taken on its own. You only need 1oz to start and gradually work your way up to 4 oz. When you become a veteran wheatgrass drinker, you can take up to 6oz daily.
If you do drink that amount let me know how you get on.
All the best
Stella
Thanks for sharing. I used to drink this everyday 🙂
My mom kept saying it is super good and nagged me to drink it at least once a day. After your post, I understand why she kept nagging me to do that. I do not really like the smell of it and wonder if we can mix anything else inside to reduce the smell?
Hi Jack..
Juice of a quarter lemon or some ginger.. Ginger is especially for queasiness. When you drink at least a litre of green veggie juice a day, your taste buds and nose will acclimatise to wheatgrass juice.
I experienced the same as yourself before I drank a lot of juice daily…
You said you thought wheatgrass enhanced your vision. How long did it take for you to experience that benefit? I know everyone is different, but still wondering how long before you experienced enhanced vision?
Do you think someone could still reap the benefits of wheatgrass if they just had one 2oz glass once per day, instead of three?
Hi Nate,
I notice differences in my vision within 2 weeks although my vision is quite bad. (Minus 5 in both eyes!)
You can drink wheatgrass juice as much as up to 8oz per day. It is really strong so I do not recommend more than that! As it is expensive, start off slowly with 1oz per day then work up to 2oz per day. You will feel a difference in your body…and skin. Within days…
Anyway, let me know how you get on Nate once you have started drinking wheatgrass juice.
Take care til then…
I’ve seen people drinking green stuff before, so I wondered what can it be.
I like all the tips you gave for people like me who are not used to the taste. I’d like to try wheatgrass to help me keep the healthy weight and improve my skin (40y old, you know, getting worse).
What is the easiest way to try it in the US? Any specific website where we can buy it? And what juicer do you recommend? I understand it should be a very strong one.
Thank you for the information.
Hi Mary,
You use it the same way in the US as in the UK. The Live Wheatgrass Juice company ship worldwide frozen wheatgrass in 1oz portions (30 portions a bag).
It is grown by them and then juiced and frozen on site. Ready for express shipping. It is cheaper to grow your own but labour intensive.
Give your skin and body a treat by drinking 30oz over the space of a month every quarter. You will be glad you did.
Thanks for your article about juicing wheatgrass.
Wheatgrass is a fantastic nutrient-rich boost to your diet but as you say, the juice is a bit of an acquired taste.
I’ve never bought my wheatgrass as it’s so easy to grow! You just need a seed tray (with a clear lid), some organic potting compost and a week or so. I cut mine at about four inches and you can do a second cutting too, making it even more economical. Apparently, the second cutting isn’t as nutrient dense as the initial shoot but I’m not that obsessed about such things – it still tastes good blended with other juices.
I juice mine using a slow masticating juicer and blend it with other juices (I’ve found carrot and lime to be a good combination) to improve the taste. Another blend I’ve enjoyed is apple, beetroot, and wheatgrass.
Nice one Phil!
You are the first person I have come across who has opted to grow their own grass. More grease to your elbows!
I have a mouldy flat so it doesn’t work to grow grass in it. It grew fine in Mum’s place, but then she broke the wheatgrass juicer! We prefer it neat half frozen. We actually like the taste and drink it on an empty stomach followed by a sip of fresh lime juice.
I’ve tried wheat juice and I can say the taste is not too appealing. I am always tempted to add other juices to at least allow me to swallow!
But I like the benefits it provides, especially the ‘thick and bushy hair’. Does taking the wheat powder also contribute to the benefits of the real wheat grass? Powder is easily available compared to the grass itself.
It is also not a cheap option too. Please provide a link to show us how to grow wheat grass at home.
It is very easy to grow, but 1 tray of wheatgrass only yields about 4 oz of juice, so you will need to have at least 10 growing over the space of 10 days to get any benefit.
However, I will try to grow it in my Mum’s place for you to see how easy growing the grass can be.
You also can grow it without any soil. This is the method Mum used and we had lovely green grass. Then she went and broke the wheatgrass juicer!
Ah well, hopefully, you will find it much easier…
I think that I can drink wheatgrass juice for improving fat loss. I actually go to the gym quite often like 6 times per week and I want to maximize the fat loss. How many times should I drink this juice and is there a best time to drink it?
Wheatgrass juice is very potent. It is an acquired taste and if you are on the heavier side, you will feel quite queasy or nauseous. Start slow and drink 1oz a day for one week. Then build up to 2oz the following week.
If you drink more than 8oz a day you will be on the toilet all day.
The best time to drink it is on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.
Hi Stella
I would like to know how to use the wheatgrass juice to loose weight, should I take it like every morning only? What plan can I establish to use it efficiently to loose weight?
I know that loosing weight takes more than only taking juice, but I be feel like this is something that I have easily access to and if I can make it an habit, I will enjoy the benefits anyway.
Thanks
Hi Adyn,
The best way to lose weight and not muscle is to eat plenty of protein and salad at each meal. One of my friends, who is in her 60s, finally listened to me and did this after 20 years of me suggesting the concept.
She has dropped 4 dress sizes as a result. All this year. From size 20 to 16!
Protein is fish, meat, chicken, eggs or mushrooms. The edible kind mind you…
I was diagnosed with anemia when I was a kid. There are times when I suffer from hypotension that’s why iron supplement is always stocked at home. In our family, we always try different health products such as moringa tea, ashitaba, green coffees, spirulina and many more. I happen to buy one of those wheatgrass powder in sachets which costs $9 for 10 packets. It tastes good and refreshing. Even my daughter would ask me to make a glass for her when she comes home from school. Lately, there are ready to drink wheatgrass that comes in a bottle. Now I’m not sure of those ones because it looks very commercial to me. I would like to try the fresh wheatgrass juice you’ve mentioned but I don’t know how to grow them. Maybe you can teach us on your next blog. Thank you for sharing this!
Hi Missus,
Growing wheatgrass is time consuming and requires plenty of space for you to do so. Once grow, you will only be able to get 4oz of juice per tray. I have tried it and it was not worth the effort.
On the other hand, if you have plenty of time, energy it will be worth buying a wheatgrass growing kit, to grow wheatgrass in your house. You also need to buy a wheatgrass juicer. It will extract the juice from the wheatgrass more effectively and only leave a much drier pulp.
For the record, if you buy the store bought juice, it has been pasteurised to keep it fresh. So there will be fewer nutrients.
If you have any more questions, let me know.
Very interesting and informative. I never heard of wheatgrass juice before. Always good to learn about something new. I look forward to more from you in the future. Keep up the good work.
Thanks James, I’m glad you enjoyed reading this article as much as I did writing it.
Thanks James,
I’m glad you enjoyed reading this post as much as I did writing it.
Wow! Who would have thought that wheatgrass is actually these much beneficial and I value all you have shared here. This makes a lot if sense in all honesty and o value them all. If I can, honestly, I will try all my possible best to ensure that I can really make good use of this. I never even knew wheat has grass. This is really good
Wheat starts off as grass before it grows tall and bears the fruit – wheat as we understand it. The juice is fantastic for cows, humans and all animals that eat grass. It also keeps you fertile for a longer period of time and enhances vision.
I am very familiar with the powder and I usually buy it in my home sometimes. It was my husband who first mentioned it to me and he really likes it too. I find it really fascinating that you can tell us about how you have personally used the juice and how it worked for you too. It really works for me just as well but I didn’t see anything getting toned in my skin.
This is why I wrote this article with the title – Drink the Juice not the Powder….
Wheatgrass juice supplies cholorophyll that contains all the nutrients for toning skin. I always see a difference in my skin tone and less bloated features on my face when I drink the juice compared with the powder.
Only when you drink the juice will you see what I mean…
I have so much reason to be happy about this plant product because they are very common in my side of the country and most people do not know how to make the most of it. I really haven’t seen the powder and seeing there is a juice for it makes sense to me because everyone can make use of it. How do I get the juice out of it?
You can get the juice from baby wheatgrass with a specially designed wheatgrass juicer. This is not your standard cold-press or centrifugal juicer. I think I should have made that more clear! There are several brands on the market. I own a stainless steel one.
